The Blazer is a nameplate with a long history in the world of SUVs. In fact, the Chevy Blazer has been around longer than the term SUV. But these days, SUVs make up most of the automotive market in the US, and the Blazer has more competition than ever. How does this longtime favorite compare to its competition? Schumacher Chevrolet of Little Falls has assembled this helpful guide to demonstrate.

First up against the Blazer is the Nissan Murano. The Murano caused quite a stir when it first launched, but in the 20 years since then, it hasn't really received much in the way of updates. One of the better examples of this is the powertrain. The Murano makes more horsepower than the Blazer, while the Blazer makes more torque. Usually, this would basically be a draw, but if you look closer, not only does the Blazer hit its peak torque number lower down in the revs, there's a toque plateau that covers a good deal of the rev range. The Blazer's power is much more usable in real-world scenarios, and that's what gives it the edge here. On top of this, the 9-speed automatic transmission in the Blazer is going to make for a much more enjoyable driving experience than you'll get with the CVT-equipped Murano. This is also probably the reason for the huge difference in towing capacity.
The Blazer's fuel economy advantage isn't a huge one, admittedly, but when you combine it with the larger fuel tank that you also get in the Blazer, it adds up to a lot fewer stops at the gas station. Another big indicator of the Murano's lack of updates is the infotainment system. The 8-inch touchscreen in the Nissan might have been competitive when it first debuted, but the rest of the industry has embraced bigger screens that are easier to see and use, and that includes Chevrolet. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also able to be used wirelessly in the Blazer, another technological advancement that hasn't made it to the Murano yet.
Chevrolet Blazer VS Toyota 4Runner

2025 Chevrolet Blazer Premier AWD | VS | 2024 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4X4 |
$47,595 ✓ | MSRP | $51,975 |
308 HP / 270LB-FT TQ ✓ | Horsepower / Torque | 270 HP / 278LB-FT TQ |

Standard ✓ | Active Noise Cancellation | Not Available |
Standard ✓ | Wireless Charging | Not Available |
10.2 inches ✓ | Infotainment Touchscreen Size | 8 inches |
Wireless ✓ | Android Auto / Apple CarPlay | Wired Only |
Up next against the Blazer is the Toyota 4Runner, and here we're comparing the top luxury trims of each vehicle, just to give a more diverse idea of what the segment looks like. Like the Murano, the 4Runner hasn't really been updated much recently, and we can again see that in the drivetrain. Both of these vehicles have V6 engines, the 4Runner's is a bit bigger, but despite this produces noticeably less horsepower. This power is sent through a downright old-fashioned 5-speed automatic transmission, and the resulting fuel economy comes up well short of what you get in the Blazer.
The Blazer has a serious advantage in creature comforts as well. While both of these vehicles come with things like leather-trimmed heated seats, Toyota wants you to pay extra for a heated steering wheel. Quite an ask considering the 4Runner is already more expensive to begin with. Then there's the equipment that isn't available on the 4Runner at all, like active noise cancellation, wireless charging/smartphone integration, and a bigger infotainment screen.
Chevrolet Blazer VS Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

2025 Chevrolet Blazer RS AWD | VS | 2025 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport SEL 4MOTION |
$47,095 ✓ | MSRP | $47,190 |
3.6-liter V6 ✓ | Engine | 2.0-liter I4 |
308 HP / 270LB-FT TQ ✓ | Horsepower / Torque | 269 HP / 273 LB-FT |
9 ✓ | Transmission Speeds | 8 |
Standard ✓ | Dual-Clutch Performance AWD | Not Available |
21.7 gallons ✓ | Fuel Tank Capacity | 18.6 |
7 ✓ | Airbags | 6 |
Standard ✓ | Surround Vision | Not Available |
Standard (Bose) ✓ | Premium Stereo | Requires higher trim |
Last up is the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and for this one, we've chosen mid-range sport-oriented trims. While the Atlas Cross Sport SEL was previously offered with a V6, the only engine choice available for 2025 is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that struggles to keep up with the V6-powered Blazer. Not only that, but the more advanced 9-speed transmission and dual-clutch performance AWD system in the Blazer make for a more engaging experience behind the wheel. And despite the bigger and more powerful engine in the Blazer, fuel economy is essentially identical, so the bigger fuel tank in the Blazer means fewer trips to the gas station.
The Blazer comes with more airbags, as well as other safety features lacking on the Atlas Cross Sport, such as HD Surround Vision. But this isn't the only area where the Balzer comes better equipped. The Blazer's premium Bose stereo comes standard on the RS. The Atlas Cross Sport is offered with a premium stereo, but not only is it not standard on the SEL, Volkswagen doesn't offer any a la carte optional equipment beyond accessories, so if you want that nicer stereo, you have to move up to the very top trim.
Winner - Chevrolet Blazer

Even when comparing different trims to a variety of different competitors' models, it's clear that the Blazer has something for everyone, a versatility that isn't going to be found anywhere else in this segment. Neither are any of them going to offer nearly as good value for money, in terms of MSRP or fuel economy. And on top of all of this, the Blazer is better-looking too.
